The Sea of ​​Okhotsk doesn't forgive overconfidence. It's one of the harshest seas on the planet: icy waters in which a person can only live for minutes, sudden storms that arise out of nowhere, fogs that sink even experienced vessels equipped with echo sounders and satellite navigation. Fishermen who have been sailing there for decades treat this sea with a respect not for the elements, but for a living being—because it's as if the Sea of ​​Okhotsk itself decides which fish to release and which to keep. And among those who fish there, there are conversations they wouldn't have in front of strangers. About how in the northern part of the sea, in an area where maps show only open water and occasional sandbanks, land sometimes appears in the fog. An island that doesn't appear on any map, not Soviet, not modern, not even a single satellite image. Old captains say: if you suddenly see a dark strip of shore ahead in thick fog where there shouldn't be one, turn around, go away, don't approach. Because the few who have moored at this island either never returned at all or returned so ill-fated that they'd rather have kept their mouths shut. Younger captains laugh at these tales. They chalk it up to mirages, to fatigue, to the fact that in the fog, an exhausted person can see all sorts of things. It's well known, after all, that on a long voyage, in storms, in fog, the psyche plays tricks on a person—you see lights, voices, and shores. And, perhaps, in most cases, they're right. But in the fall of 1981, a fishing seiner, carried far from its fishing area by a storm, came ashore in the fog where it shouldn't have been.
