This castle was abandoned by the 16th century and its stones were used at the new castle nearby. A famous dispute over the use of the Lime Road took place in the 19th century. Hugh Campbells wife and children are said to have died in the old castle when the kennedy clan burned it to the ground as part of a family feud.
