MAKING LEATHER BREECHES at Colonial Williamsburg - With Rajiv Surendra and Wilson Lecount
I've often admired the look of leather breeches in paintings from the 18th Century and discovering the existence of a breeches maker at Colonial Williamsburg was the main reason I wanted to visit. These garments seem like sculpture to me and the skills used to make them are almost completely lost. It was a thrill to meet Wilson and see him at work! https://www.rajivsurendra.com/pages/shop š“ RECOMMENDED VIDEOS/PLAYLISTS š„ VIDEO: My Updated Apartment Tour: Ā Ā Ā ā¢Ā HowĀ IĀ TransformedĀ myĀ ApartmentĀ intoĀ aĀ Magi...Ā Ā š„ VIDEO: MY NYTimes Storage Organization Tour: Ā Ā Ā ā¢Ā ThisĀ Isn'tĀ YourĀ AverageĀ StorageĀ Space!Ā Tou...Ā Ā š„ VIDEO: Tidying Your Mind: Ā Ā Ā ā¢Ā IsĀ yourĀ mindĀ aĀ clutteredĀ mess?Ā HereāsĀ howĀ ...Ā Ā š„ VIDEO: How to Wash your Whites: Ā Ā Ā ā¢Ā HowĀ toĀ WashĀ yourĀ WhitesĀ andĀ keepĀ themĀ supe...Ā Ā š„ VIDEO: Wrapping Gifts Using No Tape: Ā Ā Ā ā¢Ā WrappingĀ giftsĀ usingĀ NOĀ TAPEĀ withĀ RajivĀ Su...Ā Ā š„ VIDEO: How To Walk In Public: Ā Ā Ā ā¢Ā HowĀ ToĀ WalkĀ InĀ PublicĀ WithĀ RajivĀ SurendraĀ ...Ā Ā š„ LIST: Rajiv Surendra's Playlist Season 1: Ā Ā Ā ā¢Ā RajivĀ Surendra'sĀ PlaylistĀ Ā ā TABLE OF CONTENTS ā ⢠0:00 | Inside a Leather Breeches Shop at Colonial Williamsburg ⢠1:38 | Meet Wilson Lount ā The Apprentice Keeping a Dying Trade Alive ⢠1:58 | How Wilson Got Into Historical Sewing and Leatherwork ⢠2:19 | The Loss of Master Tradesman Jay Howlett and What It Means for the Craft ⢠3:04 | Why Losing a Master Craftsman Is Like Losing Irreplaceable Knowledge ⢠4:03 | How a Trade Dead for 150 Years Was Brought Back from Extinction ⢠4:57 | What Happens to an Apprentice When the Master Is Gone? ⢠5:21 | How the Colonial Williamsburg Apprenticeship Curriculum Works ⢠6:20 | The Stitching Technique Wilson Is Using Right Now ⢠6:46 | Were 18th-Century Breeches Entirely Sewn by Hand? ⢠7:09 | The Stouing Stitch Explained ā Joining Two Layers of Leather ⢠8:01 | Why Leather Breeches Had to Be the Toughest Garment in Your Wardrobe ⢠8:44 | Who Actually Wore Leather Breeches in the 1770s ⢠9:22 | Do the Stitches Eventually Come Apart on Leather Breeches? ⢠9:45 | Noticing Leather Breeches in 18th-Century Paintings ā What Are Those? ⢠10:16 | A Look at Finished Leather Breeches Wilson Has Made ⢠10:33 | Black Sheepskin Breeches ā Who Wore Them and Why ⢠14:54 | Who Wears the Breeches Wilson Makes Today at Colonial Williamsburg ⢠15:17 | Making Leather Breeches for Blacksmiths, Coopers, and Brick Makers ⢠15:33 | How 18th-Century Workers Cleaned and Maintained Leather Breeches ⢠15:57 | The Antimicrobial Properties of Buckskin and Why It Doesn't Smell ⢠16:32 | Rajiv Reflects on His Own Time as a Historic Interpreter ⢠17:00 | Why the Colonial Williamsburg Trades Department Is a Shining Light š” TOPICS IN THIS VIDEO š” ⢠Leather Breeches Making at Colonial Williamsburg ⢠18th-Century Leatherwork Techniques ⢠Wilson Lount Apprentice Breeches Maker ⢠Jay Howlett Master Tradesman Legacy ⢠Lost Trades Revived at Colonial Williamsburg ⢠Colonial Williamsburg Apprenticeship Program ⢠Hand Sewing Leather by Hand in the 1770s ⢠Glover's Needle for Leatherwork ⢠Stouing Stitch Leather Sewing Technique ⢠Fair Stitch Double Back Stitch on Leather ⢠Buckskin Leather Breeches History ⢠Black Sheepskin Leather Breeches ⢠Horn and Bone Buttons Covered in Leather ⢠Who Wore Leather Breeches in Colonial America ⢠Leather Breeches for Horseback Riding ⢠Working Men's Clothing in the 18th Century ⢠How Long It Takes to Make Leather Breeches by Hand ⢠Splitting Work Between Two Breeches Makers ⢠Colonial Tailoring Tools ā Thimble and Needles ⢠Inside the Construction of Leather Breeches ⢠How 18th-Century Tradesmen Cut Corners on Garments ⢠Washing and Maintaining Leather Breeches ⢠Antimicrobial Properties of Buckskin Leather ⢠Dying and Pigmenting Leather to Hide Stains ⢠Yellow Ochre and White Lead as Period Stain Covers ⢠Marquis de Lafayette Costuming at Colonial Williamsburg ⢠Blacksmiths and Coopers Wearing Leather Breeches ⢠Historic Sewing as a Living Craft ⢠Preserving Dying Trades Through Research ⢠Colonial Williamsburg Trades Department ⢠18th-Century Men's Fashion and Clothing History ⢠Hand-Stitched Garments as Works of Art ⢠Living History Interpretation and Craftwork ⢠Historical Sewing for Beginners and Enthusiasts ⢠Rajiv Surendra at Colonial Williamsburg If you enjoy Rajiv's videos and would like to see more, please contribute to the gofundme campaign that is raising the funds to produce the content on this channel: https://gofund.me/fbcb3a22 ā Instagram: Ā Ā /Ā rajivsurendraĀ Ā ā TikTok: Ā Ā /Ā rajivsurendra_Ā Ā ā Twitter: Ā Ā /Ā rajivsurendraĀ Ā ā ļø Disclosure: This video contains affiliate links.
