TALK: The Oaks Disaster in 1866 - The worst coal mining disaster in English history
Presented by Paul Hardman and Paul Darlow for the Barnsley Civic Trust in partnership with Barnsley Archives and Local Studies. This talk explores the disaster that took place during 12-13 December 1866 when explosions at the Oaks Colliery in Ardsley claimed the lives of at least 361 men and boys. Learn how the explosions impacted the Barnsley community and hear about those who managed to survive the disaster. 2026 marks the 160th anniversary of the tragedy and this talks reflects how Barnsley continues to pay its respects to the worst coal mining disaster in English history
