The just were always spot on and in fact he just played what he was hearing. That is a real testament to how jazz players should be approaching tunes- by listening to everything goin on around them and playing lines that are in the moment. Yes - all the theory works as well, but it is supporting part, not a main part of the improvisational aspect of the music. SO!
