Nearly two years after the serious car accident he caused while driving under the influence of drugs, he was confronted at the start of his trial with the accounts of the shattered lives of the victims' families in the car he crashed into. In the vehicle were the driver, a 38-year-old man, his six-year-old son, and his 27-year-old sister-in-law, who was pregnant at the time of the collision. Their lives were in danger. "It's very difficult for me to be here in this courtroom today; I've done a lot of work with my psychiatrist," the young woman testified. Six months pregnant at the time of the accident, she lost her baby. "I'll never be the same again," the driver of the Mégane stated. His liver and intestines were damaged, and his hips remain very fragile. In February 2023, after three days without sleep while taking drugs, the comedian drove on a departmental road in Seine-et-Marne and collided head-on with an oncoming Renault Mégane, seriously injuring its passengers. France then witnessed the comedian's downward spiral, his drug addiction, and his sexual practices, widely reported in the media. Today, a lone man appears before the Melun court. The accident reconstruction concluded that the cause of the collision was solely the comedian's responsibility. The two passengers who were with him at the time of the accident were cleared of all charges. Toxicological analysis revealed a high concentration of narcotics, including cocaine and 3MMC, an addictive and dangerous synthetic drug. The investigating judge referred Pierre Palmade to trial for "involuntary bodily harm, aggravated by drug use," but did not uphold the charge of "involuntary manslaughter" sought by the prosecution for the loss of the fetus, as a medical examination showed that it died in utero in the collision, and therefore had no legal existence. However, the civil parties intend to bring this issue to trial. "This decision by the investigating magistrate is, in my opinion, highly contested and questionable; it must therefore be debated," declared Mourad Battikh, the lawyer for the three victims of the accident, on Wednesday. Pierre Palmade faces a sentence of 14 years in prison and a €200,000 fine because he is a repeat offender due to a 2019 conviction for drug use. Drug use, which is exploding in France according to the latest report from the French Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (OFDT), now affects all social classes, as recently demonstrated by the Andy Kerbrat case. This phenomenon doesn't stop at the doors of the National Assembly. The La France Insoumise MP for Loire-Atlantique was caught in mid-October buying 3MMC on the Paris metro. He admitted to the act, attributing it to an "addiction" and "personal problems." What was not known, however, and what Mediapart revealed on Friday, November 15, is that the parliamentarian allegedly financed his drug use with his AFM account – for advance on parliamentary expenses – which the National Assembly funds monthly. This sum, amounting to €5,950 according to the Assembly's website, is intended to allow members of parliament, who already receive a gross monthly allowance of €7,600, to cover their expenses as elected officials. Contacted by Mediapart, Andy Kerbrat confirmed that he had "misused" his parliamentary expenses and used the funds for personal purposes. However, he denied that this money was used directly "to buy drugs." He also stated that he reimbursed these expenses to the Assembly "based on a calculation he reportedly made with his accountant," Mediapart explains, amounting to approximately €25,000.
