Spain (Al Jarreau) - How Steve Gadd played it - Drum Transcription & Performance

Steve Gadd vs. Airto Moreira: Why does Al Jarreau's version of “Spain” sound so radically different? Spain is one of the most famous compositions in the history of jazz fusion — but this version sounds very different from the original recording most musicians associate with Chick Corea’s Light as a Feather. In this video, I’m playing my Drum Transcription and performance of 92 bars from the version “Spain (I Can Recall)” as recorded by Al Jarreau and Steve Gadd on the 1980 album This Time. While the original version featuring Airto Moreira has a much more open, Brazilian and fusion-oriented character, this interpretation moves into a significantly more groove-based, R&B-influenced direction. That contrast alone makes these two recordings fascinating to compare. Al Jarreau's recording brought together an extraordinary group of musicians. Steve Gadd’s drumming plays a crucial role throughout the arrangement and demonstrates once again why he became one of the defining studio drummers of his generation. Compared to Airto Moreira’s playing on the original 1971 version of Spain, Gadd approaches the composition from an entirely different musical perspective. The original Light as a Feather recording is built around a floating, interactive fusion concept with strong Brazilian influences and a much freer rhythmic atmosphere. Steve Gadd’s interpretation, by contrast, feels tighter, more groove-centered and connected to the studio aesthetics of the late 1970s and early 1980s. I have to admit, this transcription was not always easy to hear and decode in detail. Some sections remain genuinely difficult to identify with complete certainty, especially regarding orchestration and dynamics. In particular, the tom passages are challenging to distinguish clearly, since it is not always entirely obvious which tom Steve Gadd is actually using. Certain cowbell patterns are also difficult to interpret precisely, especially the interaction between accented cowbell strokes and softer tip strokes played on the bell. Additionally, some details of the samba groove and hi-hat interpretation remain somewhat ambiguous in the original recording. For that reason, this transcription should absolutely be understood as an interpretation of the performance rather than a definitive document. As with many historical recordings, especially dense studio productions, some details inevitably remain open to interpretation. The goal here is not to claim absolute accuracy, but to explore and organize the musical ideas behind the performance as carefully as possible. What makes this especially interesting for drummers is how differently two world-class musicians can approach the same composition while still fully serving the music. Airto Moreira’s version emphasizes openness, color and floating interaction. Steve Gadd’s version emphasizes groove architecture, control, and studio precision. Both approaches are deeply musical, but they create completely different listening experiences.
