David Andrews' death reported on RTÉ News (30th June 2026)
RTÉ News reports on the death of the former Fianna Fáil TD David Andrews, who is best remembered for twice serving as Minister for Foreign Affairs, firstly under Albert Reynolds between 1992 and 1993 and again under Bertie Ahern between 1997 and 2000. A son of the renowned politician and Fianna Fáil founder member Todd Andrews, and a key member of a family dynasty steeped in conservative Irish politics, Mr. Andrews served as a TD for 37 years, being first elected to the Dáil in 1965 and finally retiring in 2002. In addition to his role as foreign affairs minister, the other posts he held included Minister for the Marine and, twice, as Minister for Defence. As well as being an outspoken human rights advocate. Mr. Andrews was also a key negotiator of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. His younger brother Niall Andrews, son Barry Andrews and nephew Chris Andrews would also later be elected to the Dáil as Fianna Fáil TDs, whilst Niall and Barry also later became MEPs, although Chris would later defect to Sinn Fein in 2012 due to his disenchantment with Micheál Martin's leadership of the party. Another of Mr. Andrews' sons is David Andrews Jr., a well-known comedian and writer who uses the pseudonym David McSavage, whilst Mr. Andrews' nephew is the legendary RTÉ and Virgin Media broadcaster and writer Ryan Tubridy, who presented The Late Late Show from 2009 until 2023.
