It offers a panoramic view of Monument Valley, the Goosenecks of the San Juan River (1,000 ft below), and distant mountains. Historical Background Naming: The name derives from mule deer (muley is rancher slang) abundant in the area, noted by 19th-century cattlemen. Early maps (USGS 1890s) label it simply "Point on Cedar Mesa." Native American Presence: Like Cedar Mesa, the area has Ancestral Puebloan sites (pottery sherds, lithic scatters) but fewer cliff dwellings due to lack of alcoves. The point was likely a lookout or signal location. Ranching Era (1880s–1950s): Mormon and Navajo ranchers grazed cattle on Cedar Mesa. Muley Point served as a natural corral and windbreak. Old cowboy line camps (stone foundations) remain nearby. No Mining Connection: Unlike the dugway, Muley Point had no direct role in uranium mining, though prospectors camped there in the 1950s for the view and water seeps. Development as Viewpoint: Recognized for scenic value in the 1960s when Utah began promoting the "Trail of the Ancients" Byway. The BLM improved a 5-mile gravel access road (Muley Point Road) in 1978, adding a small parking area and interpretive signs. Modern Status BLM-Managed: Part of the Bears Ears National Monument (designated 2016, reduced 2017, restored 2021). Dispersed camping is allowed but regulated. The Moki Dugway (also spelled Moqui Dugway in older sources) is a dramatic, unpaved switchback road carved into the face of Cedar Mesa in San Juan County, southeastern Utah. It connects the valley floor near U.S. Route 163 (about 7 miles northwest of Mexican Hat) to the top of Cedar Mesa at an elevation gain of 1,100 feet (335 m) over just 3 miles (4.8 km), with grades up to 11% and hairpin turns. 📍 Location: Muley Point 37.23427, -109.99351 Southeastern Utah, just outside of Mexican Hat, Utah V I D E O S T O W A T C H N E X T : North Georgia Camping and Off-road Adventures:    • North Georgia Overlanding   Campsites and Campgrounds to plan your trips:    • Camping - Campsites, Campgrounds, and Adve...   How we, and others, built out their rigs!:    • Rig Walk-Arounds   -------------------------------------------- ➡️ Want to see our other Social Media and Helpful Links: If yes, click here: https://linktr.ee/fiveangelsoutdoor ➡️ Want to buy a shirt, hat, or hoodie?
