Ajuterique is one of the 21 municipalities that make up the Comayagua department in the Republic of Honduras. It borders the city of Comayagua in the vast Comayagua Valley, which was once the capital of Honduras. The municipality of Ajuterique, Comayagua, has a geographical area of 61.67 square kilometers at an average altitude of 654 meters above sea level. Ajuterique is made up of 4 villages and 45 hamlets, with approximately 15,000 inhabitants throughout the municipality. The demonym for its residents is Ajuteriquense. The municipal administrative code is 0302. The geographic postal code is 12021. What does Ajuterique mean? The origin of its name is believed to come from the extinct Lenca language and means "stone of the iguanas." There is also a Nahuatl meaning: "Big eye at the foot of the mountain." It is also believed that the name Ajuterique comes from garlic, as its early inhabitants cultivated it extensively. Things to do in Ajuterique A stroll through its culture One of the most visited places is the "Umbrella Walk" in the Concepción neighborhood, where dozens of umbrellas are hung along an entire block. Murals have also been painted on all the houses along the Umbrella Walk. The town of Santiago de Axuterique was a land grant awarded to Captain Marcos de La Reina in 1550, starting one league from the Comayagua Cathedral. The sale was authorized by the Captaincy General and the Cathedral, entrusting Dean Josef Calderón de la Barca with surveying the land from the place known to the indigenous people as Ol om xi ka (oloncica), encompassing the sites of Put^unin ho, Xika guare, kan xe, Kel epha, kal pul, Kain guala, etc. This land would then be placed under the protection of the patron saint, Saint James, with Friar Francisco de Cañaveral serving as the encomendero. On January 30, 1693, the Captaincy General authorized the sale of five and a half caballerías (approximately 1.5 hectares) to its 51 tributaries for the sum of eighty tostones (approximately 1.5 million pesos) per caballería. In 1774, the Ecce Homo Church was destroyed by an earthquake. In 1800, it was recognized as a branch of the Cathedral of Santa María de Comayagua. In 1865, during the government of General Luis Bográn, it was granted the status of a municipality. While Juan López was Minister of Revenue, during the government of Terencio Sierra, the lands of the commons and the rest of the patron saint's confraternity were distributed among the community members, generating disputes among its residents. In 1903, the church was rebuilt and the bell tower was added. In 1924, the last battle of the Honduran Civil War was fought there, between forces loyal to the Minister of War, General Gregorio Ferrera, and the government forces of the President of the Republic, General Vicente Tosta Carrasco. In 1934, President Vicente Mejía Colindres inaugurated two schools, one for girls and one for boys. In 1935, Father Villanueva proposed to the bishop the official recognition of the Ecce Homo Sanctuary. In 1954, 1973, and 2008, floods caused by the Cance or Ganzo River destroyed part of the town. In 1993, a series of problems arose with Father Eduardo Velásquez, originally from Guatemala, who was accused of nine crimes. Ajuterique is located in the vast Comayagua Valley, which has a dry tropical climate for most of the year. The average temperature ranges from 24 to 35 degrees Celsius due to its altitude. It is just 10 kilometers from the city of Comayagua and 88 kilometers from the capital, Tegucigalpa. They say it was founded in 1650 in a place called Quelepa, a mountainous area where vestiges of buildings can still be found. Later, it was moved to its current location. It was given the status of a municipality in 1862, and in the 1889 Political and Territorial Directorate, it was one of the municipalities of the Comayagua District.
