The documentary explores the tragic experiences of Estonians during World War II when the Soviet occupation once again loomed over the country in 1944. As warfare reached Estonia’s borders, many who had already endured the brutalities of the Soviet rule in 1940 and 1941 feared the return of repression. Realizing that staying could mean persecution or even death, thousands were forced to make the painful decision to flee their homeland. The film weaves together historical sources and personal testimonies, capturing the refugees’ despair, courage, and resilience. It examines the emotional burden of exile and the deep connection to a homeland that might never be seen again. Combining personal stories with broader historical events, the documentary presents the reflections of five individuals on survival, loss, and the perseverance of the human spirit.
