Art Island S2E8: Graham Herbert - Artist
In Episode 8 of Art Island Season 2, filmmaker Zsofin Sheehy explores the world of builder, painter, and sailor Graham Herbert. Set in his hand-built studio and cherished spots around Hornby Island, this episode introduces Graham as a true Renaissance man. Though he doesn’t label himself an artist, Graham sees himself as a maker, where creative practice—regardless of the medium—is an act of expanding time and embracing meticulous craftsmanship. He reflects on the joys and romance of his daily life, the privilege of connecting with his community through art, and the intuitive, laser-sharp focus he brings to his work. Overflowing with heartfelt wisdom, this episode paints a portrait of pursuing one’s passions and living life to its fullest. [About Graham Herbert] Born in Calgary, Alberta, Graham Herbert is inspired by a childhood immersed in sailing and art. After moving to the West Coast in his twenties, he studied at Emily Carr College of Art and Victoria College of Art, developing a style rooted in bold compositions and the interplay of land, sea, and sky. Herbert’s paintings in acrylic and watercolour range from evocative seascapes to whimsical, imaginative scenes featuring colorful reflections, playful architecture, and classic boats. He is also a prolific builder of full-sized and model seacraft. Based on Hornby Island, Herbert creates from a studio surrounded by forest. His work has been exhibited in major galleries including the Victoria Public Art Gallery, is collected internationally, and is available through private sales and fine art prints. Herbert’s art continues to reflect his connection to the beauty and spirit of the West Coast.
