Tłuszcz 1944. Klęska 5 Dywizji Pancernej SS „Wiking”

On August 18, 1944, troops of the Red Army's 70th Army and 8th Guards Tank Corps launched the next phase of their offensive on Warsaw, capturing the town of Tłuszcz. The defending SS men from the "Wiking" Panzer Division were unable to hold their positions and began to retreat with heavy losses. The 2nd Panzer Battalion of the 5th SS Panzer Regiment, armed with Panthers and famous for the Battle of Maciejów, was cut off from the division. The tank crews had to find their way back to their own forces, fighting their way through Soviet units. During the night march and fighting, many Panthers were destroyed or abandoned by the Germans.
