In this video, we examine: ▪️ Khrushchev's Cotton Plan – how 20,000 kilometers of canals, 45 dams, and 80 reservoirs killed the Aral Sea for the sake of "white gold." The Karakum Canal lost up to 70% of its water into sand. ▪️ Vozrozhdeniya Island – the secret Aralsk-7 testing site, where combat anthrax, plague, smallpox, tularemia, and botulinum toxin were tested since 1948. Genetically modified strains were resistant to antibiotics. In 1971, a smallpox leak killed three people – the incident was kept secret for 30 years. ▪️ Anthrax spores on a former island – in 1988, hundreds of tons of anthrax were doused with bleach and buried. The island has merged with the mainland. The water barrier no longer exists. The spores are alive. ▪️ Toxic seabed – pesticides, DDT, and toxaphene in the bottom sediments. Dust storms carry the poison for over 500 km. In Karakalpakstan, esophageal cancer is 25 times higher than the global average, and 99% of pregnant women suffer from anemia. ▪️ The Kokaral Dam – how Kazakhstan and the World Bank saved the Northern Aral Sea. The water level rose by 4 meters in a year. The fish returned. But the Southern Aral Sea is lost forever. ▪️ What's happening now – Uzbekistan is planting 1.7 million hectares of saxaul on the dead seabed. The Pamir glaciers are melting.
