The polygraph, or more technically known as the polygraph, is a staple of Hollywood movies: You know, something is strapped to your chest and fingers, then a gruff, serious officer asks you some questions, and for some reason, this machine can tell whether you're telling the truth! Amazing, isn't it? In fact, these devices are currently used by law enforcement agencies like the FBI, DEA, and CIA on over 70,000 people a year in the US to recruit new employees. In many states, they're used by police to determine suspects' possible motives, and by courts to determine whether defendants should remain in custody. Some private companies even screen potential candidates by having them undergo polygraph testing. The use of polygraphs in Türkiye is much more limited; for example, they're not used in our courts. However, polygraphs still find their place in Türkiye in three important areas: First, in the private sector, especially in some security units, polygraph tests may be required during recruitment. Secondly, wealthy couples who don't trust each other pay absurd prices of 300-400 euros to have this test performed by private companies to prove whether their spouses are lying. But thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, polygraphs are extremely popular in the Turkish entertainment industry. Largely influenced by Hollywood, you can find dozens of videos on Turkish television and YouTube channels featuring individuals hooking themselves or their guests up to these devices and engaging in various humorous pranks. Actually, entertainment programs don't have much of a problem other than wasting people's time and adding almost nothing to their lives. However, sometimes these devices can cross the line and be used by charlatans who tell blatant lies to increase the popularity of their misleading claims. Because viewers of these programs might think, "Well, the polygraph tells the truth, so he can't be lying!" This is incredibly dangerous!
