Hello young people! Is neurodivergence truly an individual medical condition? Or has capitalism transformed human differences into pathologies? In this lecture, I present an in-depth analysis of neurodivergence, autism, ADHD, neurodiversity, ableism, and Marxism, exploring how modern society treats neurodivergent people and why so many forms of cognitive functioning are classified as deficits. Drawing on his own experience with late diagnosis of autism and ADHD, João discusses how capitalism produces exclusion, psychological suffering, and mass medicalization, transforming neurological differences into individual problems. Throughout the presentation, the contributions of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Lev Vygotsky, Alexander Luria, Frantz Fanon, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and Mark Fisher are discussed, connecting philosophy, psychology, mental health, education, and politics.
