Using a Mood Board for Fashion Shoots | Inside Fashion and Beauty Photography with Lindsay Adler

Mood boards are an important part of how fashion photographer communicates with their creative team. This is the visual roadmap for a shoot whether producing images for a magazine editorial or shooting a major ad campaign. What is a mood board? A mood board is a collection of images that helps to communicate the creative direction of a shoot. Often the images on the mood board show the type of hair, makeup, wardrobe, lighting, and location of the upcoming shoot. Creating clear visuals allows all creatives involved in a shoot to get inspired, prepare and be on the same page! Images on a mood board can be from anywhere! They do not have to be (and typically are not) images that were previously taken by the photographer. The images gathered can be illustrations, photos from Pinterest, paintings, stills from movies, and much more. When a photographer has a very defined style it can be quite easy for a magazine or brand to understand the results that the photographer will achieve based on the mood board they have built. In this video, I show how I create a mood board on canva.com with the theme of “Fuchsia Fantasy’ (loosely inspired by Valentino’s recent runway show) in order to direct a creative editorial image.
