What he discovered was the beginning of numbers. Born from the markings engraved on this tiny, thin bone fragment, numbers expanded the world of natural numbers, rational numbers, and real numbers. Along the way, zero and negative numbers were also born. Then, in the 16th century, with the discovery of imaginary numbers, the number system we use today was completed. Like most other number inventions, imaginary numbers were met with a cold reception from mathematicians. "Useless," "difficult to understand," "sophisticated," "impure," and "tricky" were the venomous words mathematicians used to describe imaginary numbers. Descartes gave them the derisive name "imaginary number." That's why we write imaginary numbers as "i." However, with the advent of quantum mechanics, the status of imaginary numbers changed dramatically. Imaginary numbers were essential for Stephen Hawking and Penrose to explain the origin of the universe. From the smallest to the largest, imaginary numbers exert their influence everywhere in the world around us today.
