Newcastle Castle. No, Not That One.

This Newcastle Castle is in Bridgend, Glamorgan, South Wales. The Welsh call it Y Castell Newydd. (Just to clarify, the one in Newcastle is just called The Castle, Newcastle which makes it sound like a rather seedy nineties nightclub.) In 1106, William de Londres, one of the legendary Twelve Knights of Glamorgan built a ringwork during the Norman invasion of Wales. Its sister castles, Coity Castle and Ogmore Castle were built around the same time as part of the defences of the Lordship of Norman baron Robert Fitzhamon of whom William was a loyal follower. The castle's defences were strengthened in the latter part of the twelfth century. This included the construction of a two-meter thick curtain wall around a forty-meter long courtyard.
