Bağlama Making Series | Crafting the Neck The neck of a bağlama is one of the most important elements that determines the instrument’s character, balance, and playability. Its length, thickness, and overall shape are carefully designed according to the instrument’s fundamental pitch (karâr note), making every measurement a critical part of the building process. However, craftsmanship goes far beyond measurements alone. Every musician has different hands, which makes neck making one of the most challenging and experience-dependent stages of building a bağlama. The goal is to create a neck profile that offers comfort and control for the widest range of players. Even the smallest differences—measured in fractions of a millimeter—can significantly affect the playing experience. Depending on the musician’s hand size, different neck profiles may be required. Equally important is understanding the wood itself: its grain, density, stability, and how it will behave over the years. In the future, I hope to compile this knowledge into a book featuring three different neck profiles built on the same bağlama body dimensions, supported by photographs and detailed illustrations. My wish is to pass this experience on to the next generation of instrument makers. Sapın uzunluğu, kalınlığı ve formu; enstrümanın karar sesine (nota düzenine) göre belirlenir ve her ölçü büyük bir hassasiyetle hesaplanır. Ancak iş sadece ölçülerle bitmez. Her insanın el yapısı farklıdır. Bu nedenle sap yapımı, bağlama üretiminin en zor ve en fazla tecrübe gerektiren aşamalarından biridir. Amaç, çoğu müzisyenin rahatlıkla kullanabileceği ideal sap formunu yakalayabilmektir.
