Why Is Lesotho Giving South Africa Its Water?
Every time you open a tap in Gauteng, you probably assume that water comes from somewhere nearby. It doesn’t. A huge portion of South Africa’s economic heartland is being supported by water that starts its journey in another country entirely — high up in the mountains of Lesotho. And without it… things would look very different. In this video, I break down the Lesotho Highlands Water Project — one of the most ambitious engineering projects in Africa — and explain how it works in simple terms. We look at: Why Gauteng cannot rely on its own natural water supply How Lesotho’s unique geography makes this project possible How water travels hundreds of kilometres across borders without needing pumps in certain sections How tunnels, dams, and gravity are used together to move massive volumes of water How this same water is also used to generate electricity for Lesotho But this isn’t just an engineering story. It’s a story about survival, economics, and cooperation between two countries. Because without this project: Factories would slow down. Water restrictions would become the norm. And millions of people would feel the impact. At the same time, this project isn’t perfect. There are delays. There are risks. And there are big questions about whether South Africa is doing enough to protect and manage the water it already has. So the real question becomes: Is this project a long-term solution… or just buying us time?
