RoboCop (Game Boy) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Ocean's 1990 licensed-based platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, RoboCop. RoboCop was an early side-scrolling shoot 'em platforming shooter for the Game Boy, and though its a different game, it does stand up fairly well against the Data East-published NES game based on the cyborg cop's first film. As Alex Murphy, you walk around super robot-punching and firing at everything in sight across Detroit, mainly focused on wiping out endless waves of thugs per your prime directives. Robocop is quite a difficult game once you get to the latter half, but it does become more and more manageable as you become more familiar with the layouts of the stages and enemy placements. It's never easy though - it's all to easy to get wiped out by those jerks that throw grenades at you. That can be a bit frustrating, for sure. Between each stage, there are bonus rounds: remember that scene in the movie where the woman is about to be raped and Robo shoots the guy between her legs through her skirt? One plays like a reenactment of that scene, while another has you creating a composite image of a face to search the police database with. They are pretty neat diversions that keep with the spirit of the film. The real success in RoboCop is the presentation. This version of the game is quite famous for its rendition of the movie's theme song. If you haven't heard it, you really need to. It's impressively well done - it's definitely one of my favorite Jonathon Dunn soundtracks. For such an early Game Boy game it also looks really good - the sprites are a bit small and squidgy, but everything, especially the background graphics, show a lot of attention paid to details. It has the tendency to smear pretty badly on the original Game Boy's screen, but hey, that's something we just dealt with back in the day. If you really can't take the limitations of the LCD screen, though, emulators will eliminate that ghosting completely, so it's a non-issue. Overall, I really like Robocop. Just like Batman for the Game Boy, it takes a tried-and-true game play formula and adapts it to the small-screen fairly successfully, and throws in a good helping of production values to sweeten the deal. It's ridiculously hard and gets a little dull toward the end, but it's a solid action game for those that like the older, simpler games. This was recorded in Retroarch using the DMG shader to lend it the same feeling as seeing it played on the original hardware. I toned down the image ghosting a bit for the sake of watchability, but it's quite accurate overall. _ No cheats were used during the recording of this video.
