Private Equity & Alternative Investments 101: Understanding Opportunities Beyond Traditional Markets

In this webinar, Nora Lamendola is joined by Nic Gookin and Shaun Carney to discuss investing beyond traditional markets, with a specific focus on private equity. Private equity has become a more common topic among investors, especially as more companies stay private longer and headlines around IPOs, venture capital, and alternative investments continue to grow. But while private equity can sound exciting, it also comes with important trade-offs that investors should understand before committing capital. Nic and Shaun break down what private equity actually means, how it differs from traditional public market investments, and the different ways investors may gain exposure, from liquid funds and interval funds to private placements and special purpose vehicles. They also discuss why liquidity, transparency, valuation, fees, taxes, and concentration risk matter so much when evaluating private investment opportunities. Shaun shares practical examples of situations clients may encounter, including being approached by friends, business contacts, or outside advisors with private investment opportunities. The conversation closes with a planning-focused discussion on how private equity may fit into an overall portfolio, why it should generally be viewed as a smaller satellite position rather than a core holding, and what questions investors should ask before moving forward. Topics covered include: What alternative investments are How private equity differs from public markets Venture capital, growth equity, buyouts, and special situations Why more companies are staying private longer The liquidity challenges of private investments How private companies are valued The impact of high fees and limited transparency The risks of investing through friends or private deals Questions to ask before committing capital How private equity may fit into a broader financial plan Private equity can be a useful tool in the right situation, but it is not appropriate for every investor. Before making any investment decision, it is important to understand the risks, review the details, and consider how the opportunity fits within your overall financial plan. --- This material is purely intended to be general and educational in nature, and should not be construed as specifically-tailored investment, financial planning, tax, legal, or other professional advice.
