When I started in this coffee universe, I had no idea what equipment to buy to set up my espresso setup. I went out buying in the order I thought would be the best, but due to my lack of experience, I ended up not prioritizing the essential items. My biggest mistake was buying an espresso machine first. That is the worst decision to make. And what would be the essential items? 1) Grinder; 2) Coffee; 3) Machine; 4) Tamper; 5) Scale. Of all the items, the grinder is the one that will most affect the flavor of the coffee and therefore, in my opinion, this is the most important. Never buy a manual espresso machine without a good grinder. The chances of getting frustrated are huge.
