Hipólito Feliz has been imprisoned for ten years. He is an evangelical Christian and now speaks without shouting, not because he lacks energy, but because he no longer has to compete with the noise. As he recalled, silence was nonexistent in La Victoria National Penitentiary. “That was a ticking time bomb,” he says. There, he lived “between life and death,” surrounded by violence, drugs, and beds that weren't always guaranteed. Anyone who didn't have one was “twins of a prisoner”: he was the last to go to bed, the first to get up, and slept on the floor while others walked over him. Today, sitting next to his wife at the Las Parras Correction and Rehabilitation Center during a routine visit, Hipólito sums up the change with a phrase he repeated four times: “It's like night and day.” Not everything is perfect. He is farther from his family, and visits have become more difficult for those who come from the city. But even so, when he talks about the inside of the prison, he returns to the same idea: tranquility, hygiene, and order. “Here we breathe fresh air,” she says.
