DRAUGR (Again-Walker) β My Husband Came Back from the Grave | Dark Norse Lament | Old Norse Horror
π DRAUGR β the again-walker, the dead who will not stay in the mound. A year ago she buried her husband in the barrow on the hill, and sealed the howe, and learned to grieve. Then, on the longest night of the year, three knocks came at the door. And she knew that knock. What stood outside wore her husband's face β hel-blue and swollen, cold as grave-earth, no breath, no beat beneath the ribs. It spoke his name in his own voice. It asked, so gently, to be let inside. "Lie down beside me as before. You loved me once. Now ope the door." And she almost did. This is not a song about a monster. It is a song about grief β about the night the dead come knocking, and the terrible mercy of saying no. She laid cold iron on the sill. She named him: draugr β go home to the howe. And then she wept β not for the thing at the door, but for the man she had truly wed, the one who was already gone. I know your face β but you are not him. Sleep, dead man. Sleep. This is an original Norse folk-horror lament in English with an Old Norse bridge, composed for the Nordic Folk Song channel β songs of frost, myth and fire from the world of the North. π A dark mirror to WIDOW OF THE LONGBOAT (#05): there the sea kept the body and never gave it back β here the body comes home, but it is not him. ββββββββββββββββββββββββ π΅ LYRICS β DRAUGR ββββββββββββββββββββββββ The hearth was low, the snow was deep, The longest night of all the year. I'd barely closed my eyes to sleep β Three knocks. His knock. And he was here. I knew that knuckle on the wood, I knew that shadow on the floor. I laid him where the barrow stood, And sealed the howe a year before. [Chorus] I know your face β I know your name, I knew your knock upon the door. But oh, you came back not the same β Your heart, my love, beats no more. BΓ³ndi minn β come not inside: The dead must keep the other side. I drew the bolt β I should have known, The thing that waited held no breath. Hel-blue and swollen, grave-earth-grown, He wore my husband like a death. "Come, wife, and let me in to rest, Lie down beside me as before. The mound is cold β your bed is best β You loved me once. Now ope the door." [Old Norse Bridge] ΓΓΊ ert draugr β aptrgangr. HaugbΓΊi β far heim Γ haug. Hjarta ΓΎitt slΓ¦r eigi meir. Hendr ΓΎΓnar β kaldar, kaldar. Ek ΓΎekki andlit ΓΎitt β en ΓΎΓΊ ert eigi hann. Sof, dauΓ°r maΓ°r. Sof. (You are a draugr β an again-walker. Mound-dweller β go home into the howe. Your heart beats no more. Your hands β cold, cold. I know your face β but you are not him. Sleep, dead man. Sleep.) I laid the cold iron on the sill, I would not let the barrow in. I loved you β and I love you still β But love is not the thing within. ββββββββββββββββββββββββ π NORDIC FOLK SONG β original songs of gods, ravens, longboats and the silence between the drums.
