On July 9, 2023, at the start of Stage 9 of the Tour de France between Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat and the Puy de Dôme, only 25 seconds separated Tadej Pogacar from the yellow jersey, Jonas Vingegaard. With the cycling world still remembering the legendary shoulder-to-shoulder battle between Raymond Poulidor and Jacques Anquetil in 1964, the two best riders in the world left their own mark on these iconic slopes. Wearing the white jersey, the Slovenian did everything he could in the final hectometres to crack the Jumbo-Visma leader. At the finish line, he had taken back eight seconds, reducing the overall gap to its smallest margin yet before the rest day. What followed became cycling history: the Col de Joux-Plane, the Combloux time trial, Pogacar's collapse on the Col de la Loze, and another overall victory for Jonas Vingegaard on the Champs-Élysées.
