Documentary on Jaquet-Droz's android automatons: the writer, the draftsman and the musician. Part1.

Lutèce Créations (https://www.automates-boites-musique.com), the European specialist in music boxes and automatons (or automata), invites you to watch a four-part documentary film made in 2001 by Philippe Sayous, “Les androïdes Jaquet-Droz” (The Jaquet-Droz androids). This video is the first part of the documentary and is entitled: The Birth of Jaquet-Droz Androids. Here is a summary: Between 1770 and 1773, after the death of his young wife and daughter, Pierre Jaquet-Droz, a clockmaker by trade, built himself a “little mechanical family.” A worthy successor to the famous Vaucanson, he worked with his son, Henri-Louis, and Jean-Frédéric Leschot to create sophisticated androids with very real functions, whose size, appearance, and movements closely imitated nature. The birth of these writing, drawing, and musician automata marked a milestone in medical research: the manufacture of artificial organs and mechanical prostheses to replace lost limbs. Like Vaucanson, the Jaquet-Droz family's goal was not only to entertain the public, but also to educate them and advance science. This film is an invitation to travel through time, where the most extraordinary creatures come together: Vaucanson's automata, Baron Von Kempelen's chess player, Abbé Mical's talking heads, and the Maillardet brothers' magicians.
