The story centers on two seemingly unrelated crimes. First, a woman disappears from a small village in Sweden, and her body is later found in a swamp. The initial suspect is a neighbor, Folke Bengtsson, who happens to be a convicted killer from an earlier Martin Beck case. However, Beck begins to doubt Bengtsson's guilt. Simultaneously, a violent shootout erupts between police and two teenage boys, resulting in the death of a policeman. Beck and his partner, Lennart Kollberg, investigate both cases, which eventually prove to be connected. As they dig deeper, they uncover a web of deceit and corruption, forcing them to confront the changing nature of crime and justice in modern society.
