Britain’s Underwater Defences: The Astute Class Maintenance Logjam

Right now, the Royal Navy faces its most serious availability crisis in modern history. With zero Astute-class attack submarines available for deployment, the UK's underwater defence is functionally paralysed. This video examines the deep-rooted maintenance logjam at HMNB Devonport and Faslane, where the absolute priority to sustain the Vanguard-class Continuous At-Sea Deterrence (CASD) has stranded Britain's hunter-killers. We explore the specific operational status of vessels like HMS Audacious, HMS Ambush, and HMS Anson, the severe impact of equipment cannibalisation, and the Ministry of Defence's emergency Submarine Maintenance Recovery Plan. Finally, we analyse what the forthcoming Defence Investment Plan must deliver to salvage the fleet before the Dreadnought and SSN-AUKUS programmes collapse the infrastructure completely. Be sure to watch my November 2025 video, "The Astute Gap," for the full technical background and early warning signs of this crisis.
