I happened to read the zoo keepers’ latest gorilla journal (November, 2019). It says this way... (Summary, hope this helps.) We have seen Genki holding her head in her hands since last month. We often see this pose of her during winter or on rainy days, which is her regular pose when she feels cold. She has lost some weight lately (her favorite plants are out of season now), and has lost some of her hair because of Kintaro clinging to her. We think that’s why she started to feel cold earlier than usual this season. That behavior of her holding her head, you might think she has a headache. However, she doesn’t always do that. In fact, we hardly see that when it’s warm or she is eating food, but we do more often on rainy/cloudy and chilly days. Also, she does have a good appetite as usual. Considering these facts, we don’t think that she is in bad shape. For Genki, we’ve been trying some things to keep her warm. Keeping their rooms and outside enclosure a bit warmer than usual with floor heating, and turning on heat fans, etc. We also gave her a warm wool lap blanket, but she is not interested in it. Instead Momotaro used it as you might expect lol. We’ve been giving the gorillas nutritious food more than usual and trying specially for Genki to get their favorite grass (which is barely available this time of year) so that they will gain weight. We are going to keep watching out for not only Genki but all our gorillas in order that they can stay well and live healthy lives.
