Hiking the Pieterpad: The Best Long-Distance Trail in the Netherlands | Practical Guide #Pieterpad

Hiking the Pieterpad: The Ultimate Long-Distance Trail in the Netherlands 🄾 The Pieterpad – Practical Information What is the Pieterpad? The Pieterpad is the Netherlands’ most famous long-distance hiking trail. It stretches for about 500 kilometers (310 miles), from Pieterburen in the far north to the Sint-Pietersberg near Maastricht in the very south. It’s divided into 26 official stages, ranging from 12 to 24 kilometers each. The route is mostly flat, especially in the north, where there’s quite a bit of asphalt. But it’s also beautifully varied — dunes, forests, heathlands, and small country roads. The southern part is hillier and feels almost un-Dutch, but throughout the trail you’re surrounded by nature and tranquility. šŸ—ŗļø History The Pieterpad was created between 1978 and 1983 by Toos Goorhuis-Tjalsma from Tilburg and Bertje Jens from Groningen — two friends who wanted the Netherlands to have a serious long-distance trail. Halfway along the trail, in Vorden, you can find their footsteps monument, and another memorial near Schoonloo–Sleen honors Toos, who passed away in 2004. 🧭 Planning & Preparation There’s a fantastic official website with route details, updates, and accommodation options. https://www.pieterpad.nl/ You can also buy guidebooks that include maps, step-by-step descriptions, and plenty of background about the regions you walk through. Another great resource is the Pieterpad Facebook group, where hikers share tips, photos, and updates about route changes or transport. https://www.facebook.com/groups/LAWwa... Transport One of the best things about the Pieterpad is how accessible it is. Every stage can be reached by public transport — sometimes directly by train, sometimes with a short bus or taxi ride. Some useful apps: https://9292.nl/ https://www.ns.nl/ Pro tip: parking in the Netherlands is often free at train stations. There’s also a Facebook group called ā€œPieterpad Vervoerā€ where local volunteers offer transport between stages for a small fee. https://www.facebook.com/groups/41117... --- ā˜€ļø When to Go The Pieterpad can be walked year-round. I experienced it in winter, spring, summer, and autumn — and every season has its own charm. Spring brings flowers and fresh greens; summer gives you long days; autumn means colorful forests; and even winter can be magical, as long as you’re prepared for short daylight hours and some mud! --- šŸ•ļø Accommodation Along the way you’ll find hotels, B&Bs, hostels, and campgrounds. In the off-season, many campsites close, so plan ahead if you’re camping. I stayed in all sorts of places — and even wild camped once, when nothing else was open. An other good option is the website 'Vrienden op de fiets'. Where people rent out a room for a budget price. https://www.vriendenopdefiets.nl/ 🐾 Walking with a Dog You can absolutely hike the Pieterpad with your dog, but keep a few things in mind: 1. Dog-friendly accommodation can be harder to find — not all places accept pets. 2. Certain trail sections don’t allow dogs, like part of the Zuidlaren–Rolde stage and part of the epilogue near Pieterburen. Otherwise, it’s a lovely experience for both you and your four-legged friend. 🚺 Walking Solo as a Woman Walking solo as a woman on the Pieterpad is very safe. I never felt uncomfortable or unsafe — not once. The only downside is that accommodation can be a bit pricier when you’re alone, since you can’t share a room. Along the way, I hiked with some other people — one day with a friend and four days with my daughter — but most of the time I walked solo, and it was perfectly fine. šŸ’” Extra Tips Bring good rain gear — Dutch weather can change quickly. Always check the official website before setting out; routes sometimes change due to construction or flooding. Most villages have cafĆ©s or small supermarkets, but not all — bring snacks and water. The route is clearly marked with red and white stripes — just follow them and you’ll be fine! And most importantly: take your time. The Pieterpad is not about speed; it’s about enjoying the quiet beauty of the Netherlands.
