The third-generation Mitsubishi Outlander has received its second facelift. This is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Under the hood of this family crossover lies some interesting technology. The Outlander has been in production since 2001. In the conventionally powered version, it's even available as a 7-seater. It's the perfect car for taking kids to school, shopping, or vacationing. But technologically, it's nothing special. Then, in 2012, Mitsubishi introduced the Plug-in Hybrid version – a plug-in hybrid, or PHEV for short. Plug-in hybrids themselves are nothing new, but the Mitsubishi hybrid is more complex. Most of the Outlander PHEV is powered by two electric motors – one for each axle. These are powered by a traction battery located under the floor. The traction battery can be charged from a socket or by the combustion engine. The combustion engine can function either as a generator, as in the Opel Ampera, or, under certain conditions, it can drive the front axle.
