Youth coaching -- More than a game | Anna-Lesa Calvert | TEDxBuffalo

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. We all think we know what youth sports can do for kids: fitness, teamwork, coordination. But given the time and connection coaches have with their teams, we can do a lot more to help kids from every circumstance with nutrition, anger management, socialization, leadership, and much more. Anna-Lesa Calvert reports from the front lines of a new style of youth sports coaching. Anna-Lesa Calvert grew up playing soccer in Dallas, Texas for the prestigious D’Feeters Soccer Club. After her club career, she joined the University of Buffalo women’s soccer team, where she was a four-year starter in net, earning MAC Academic Honors in 2004 and 2005. Along with her career at the University at Buffalo, she was a member of the Rochester Ravens semi-pro women’s soccer team for two years. In 2014, Calvert was named a part of the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s National Training Team. Anna-Lesa holds a USFF National Youth License, a National “D” license and an NSCAA Urban Soccer Diploma, and has been coaching in the Western New York area since 2002. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
