Sharmila Tagore, Bollywood actress speaks of her early years

Hindi and Bengali film actress Sharmila Tagore speaks about how she get discovered for Apur Sansar. She says " We were in Asansol those days my father was posted there and we already knew that Mani Da (Satyajit Ray) was already very famous he had made Pather Panchali, Aparajito etc. And there was this big hunt for Apu's wife Aparna, a young girl. There were lots of ads in the paper and one of my cousin in Asansol , very jokingly said why don't you apply so we laughed and end conversation. I came back to Calcutta, I was schooling there. I was staying with my grandparents. I used to go to Diocesan and back by bus everyday and one morning rather afternoon when I came back, a man met me at the doorstep and said what's your name? So I was slightly nervous and he asked me my name I told him. Then he asked What's your father's name? and What's your telephone number? At that point of time I was very nervous but I was at the door step so I was alright and then I told him then he contacted my parents and anyway Mani da had posted spies in front of all the schools and they were following all these young people home and thank god nobody was bashed up in the process." Sharmila Tagore is an Indian film actress known for her works predominantly in Hindi cinema. She has received two National Film Awards and two Filmfare Awards for her performances. She led the Indian Film Censor Board from October 2004 till March 2011. In December 2005 she was chosen as an UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She was one of the International Competition's Jury Members at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. In 2013, she was awarded Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
