In this episode, we work with an extract from Tristram Shandy by Laurence Sterne — one of the most playful, eccentric, and linguistically inventive novels in English literature. Sterne’s writing is witty, digressive, ironic, and full of sudden changes in rhythm, making it a fascinating challenge for developing a natural British accent, expressive phrasing, and confident reading aloud. 🎯 Approximate CEFR level: C2 This passage is best suited to very advanced learners because the language is dense, humorous, highly stylised, and full of long sentence structures, rhetorical turns, and eighteenth-century phrasing. It is excellent for learners who want to practise not only clarity and fluency, but also irony, timing, vocal agility, and subtle shifts of attitude in spoken English. You’ll first hear me read the passage at a natural pace in Standard Southern British English. Then we break it down line by line so you can shadow, repeat after me, and develop fluency, rhythm, intonation, and spoken confidence. Shadowing is one of the most effective ways to internalise the rhythm and sound patterns of British English. By listening and speaking along, you practise stress, vowel reduction, connected speech, timing, and natural phrasing all at once. ✔️ Ideal for advanced learners of British English ✔️ Helpful for actors, ESL speakers, and lovers of classic literature ✔️ Focus on British accent, connected speech, rhythm, intonation, humour, and reading aloud 📚 Resources 📥 Download the free PDF of today’s passage(with key vocabulary notes) →https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/rco4i8... 🌐 Learn more →https://www.ashleyhoward.me 🔔 Subscribe for more British Accent Shadowing episodes and pronunciation training. 💛 Support the channel by becoming a member →   / @ashleyhowardvoicecoach
