In this video, I brought Mahamed Aly, a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and professional fighter in the United States, to show a surprising attack from the lasso guard. Mahamed has his own YouTube channel focused on Jiu-Jitsu and is a great student of this position. The recording took place here with me, and he explained a different way of thinking about the lasso guard in BJJ, especially when the passer is trying to overcome the position. The technique begins when the opponent manages to grip the arm and is already throwing their leg over in the lasso guard. Instead of attempting to block or defend in a traditional way, Mahamed teaches turning to the opposite side, rotating the hips and transforming the situation into an armlock. He grips the elbow firmly, stabilizes the base, and when the passer thinks they are passing the guard, he turns completely to the other side and locks in the submission. It's a quick transition that catches the opponent by surprise in Jiu-Jitsu. This lasso guard attack is useful for any belt level that already trains this position in BJJ, from blue belt to more advanced belts. The key is understanding the philosophy behind the movement, not just memorizing the mechanical sequence. Mahamed explains that posting only the position without showing the adjustments and details ends up being useless because you don't feel where the pressure is going and end up doing everything wrong.
