A História Oculta das Antigas Fazendas Brasileiras
When we think of old Brazilian farms, we usually imagine imposing mansions, tranquil rural landscapes, and a simple life in the countryside. But behind this romanticized image lies a much more complex—and often forgotten—history. In this video, we will explore the hidden history of 19th-century Brazilian farms, revealing how these spaces were deeply linked to slavery, land concentration, power struggles, and the resistance strategies of the enslaved Black population. What was life like for enslaved people on small and large estates? Where did they live? How did the slave quarters, punishments, surveillance, and forms of social control function? What was the impact of the 1850 Land Law? And why do many of these stories remain invisible in the Brazilian collective memory? Based on historical research, criminal proceedings, inventories, parish records, and studies on slavery in Western Minas Gerais, we will analyze a past that still leaves deep marks on Brazilian society. Because every farm has a story. And some of them have never been told.
