James Ivory on Films, Ismail Merchant &, India
We sat down with the well-known filmmaker James Ivory to talk about a whole range of things from growing up in Oregon to making his first two short films, how he met Ismail Merchant and their long collaboration in making award-making films. We also talk about his first short film that introduced him to India, Indian musicians like Ali Akbar Khan, Ravi Shankar and actors like Madhur Jaffrey and Saeed Jaffrey. Ivory met Merchant during the screening of his first short film at India House in New York city. A Room With A View, Maurice, Howard's End, Heat and Dust and Shakespeare Wala are some of the film that Ivory and Merchant made. Ivory was the director and Merchand was the producer for their films. Ivory was born in Berkeley and grew up in Oregon, where he spends time every year visiting with his old friends. Ivory shares his earlier memories of watching film and SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON is one of the films that left a deep impact on him. This interview was recorded in 2017 at the San Francisco International Film Festival. In 2018 Ivory won his first Academy Award for CALL ME BY YOUR NAME.
