Geologic History of Montana
In 2020, Dr. Rob Thomas (University of Montana Western) and Dr. Don Hyndman (University of Montana-Missoula) published the 2nd edition of the iconic Roadside Geology of Montana book, which received the High Plains Book Award in 2021. The new book, a second edition in name only is in color with all new maps, cross sections, diagrams, photographs, and road guides. The talk will focus on a broad overview of the geologic history of Montana, from the metamorphic basement rocks formed in plate collisions nearly 4 billion years ago to the arrival of humans on the landscape in “recent” times. It’s a journey through deep time, and the rocks of Montana tell the story as well as any on Earth.
