The Strangest Creatures in the Deepest Place on Earth... PART 2

What lives at the bottom of the ocean? We descend from the deep abyss all the way down to the Mariana Trench, the deepest place on Earth, meeting eight of the strangest creatures ever filmed in the crushing dark. First comes the faceless cusk eel, Typhlonus nasus, a fish with no visible face that vanished from science for 144 years before it was rediscovered south of Tasmania in 2017. Then the tiny fangtooth, whose teeth are so long it grew sockets beside its own brain to hold them. We watch herds of pink walking sea pigs, meet the bigfin squid Magnapinna with arms like elbowed spider legs, and follow the dumbo octopus filmed 6.96 kilometers down in the Java Trench, the deepest octopus ever recorded. Deeper still lives the supergiant amphipod Alicella gigantea, which a 2025 study suggests may roam over half the world's seabed. Near the very bottom sits the xenophyophore, the largest single celled organism on Earth, hoarding lead, uranium, and mercury. And last, an unidentified Mariana jellyfish that science still cannot name. This is a slow descent into deep sea biology, ocean mysteries, and the animals that thrive where nothing should.
