Welcome to my Vienna walk from Mozart Fountain at Mozartplatz to Doktor-Karl-Lueger-Platz. The Mozart Fountain, also known as the Magic Flute Fountain, is a fountain on Mozartplatz in Vienna's 4th district of Wieden. The fountain was built in 1905 during the tenure of Mayor Karl Lueger. The design, which won an award in 1900, comes from the architect Otto Schönthal and the sculptor was Carl Wollek. The fountain is intended to commemorate the world premiere of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, which took place in the Freihausheater on Wieden in 1791. The bronze group shows Tamino and Pamina, the main characters of the Magic Flute. My video ends at the Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz. It is located in the 1st district of Vienna, Innere Stadt. It was named in 1926 after the mayor of Vienna, Karl Lueger. The monument to Vienna's mayor Karl Lueger was created in 1913–1916 by the sculptor Josef Müllner and was originally intended to be erected on the Rathausplatz. In 1926 it found its place on the new Dr.-Karl-Lueger-Platz. The late historic bronze statue of the mayor stands on a stone plinth, flanked at the corners by four stone statues that symbolize Lueger's achievements. It is a worker with a gas pipe who indicates the municipalization of the gas works, a farm worker who symbolizes the creation of the forest and meadow belt around Vienna, a grieving mother who points out the welfare of widows and orphans, and an old man, which represents the construction of the pension home in Lainz. In addition, there are reliefs on each side of the base, which also illustrate Lueger's achievements. Because the eponym Karl Lueger used anti-Semitic populism as a politician, the University of Applied Arts Vienna announced a competition in 2009 to transform the monument into a “memorial against anti-Semitism and racism in Austria”. By April 2010, over 150 proposals had been received. In September 2020, the memorial was sprayed with red and yellow paint by strangers. The initiative was initiated by the Black Lives Matter movement from the United States. the removal of monuments by racists was requested.
