Krämerbrücke Erfurt | Arte Doku: Die Welt der Brücken - Einfallstore für den Handel

In April 2019, I was allowed to shoot a documentary about the Krämerbrücke in Erfurt for arte and have uploaded a summary here. The original episode is 45 minutes long and also tells the story of the Noordkasteel Bridge in the port of Antwerp. The five-part documentary series "The World of Bridges" shows selected bridges around the world that have a special aura, tells their history and the stories that surround them and take place on them, today and in the past. Each episode takes us to two bridges in different parts of the world that have something in common, be it their construction or their function. The Krämerbrücke is the landmark of the city of Erfurt and the longest bridge in Europe that is continuously covered with houses. It was built in the 14th century and crosses the Breitstrom, a tributary of the Gera. In the Middle Ages, the bridge was part of the Via Regia, one of the most important trade routes across Europe. Located in the middle of Germany, today it is a tourist magnet - and a village in its own right in the heart of Erfurt's old town. People who live here must like the special flair. There are only a few meters between the houses. At peak times, 5,000 tourists cross the bridge every day. But the Krämerbrücke is a sought-after place to live and work. Rents on the bridge are moderate - so even artists, craftspeople and small businesses on low incomes can afford the apartments and stores. Dreamers, lateral thinkers, creative and courageous people who have found their happiness on and around the bridge are drawn here. They use the bridge as a place to live, work or play sports.
