EPISODE 86: Paradise Profiteers features an old-school auction gem from Reiner Knizia. Published by Kosmos in 1993 with art from Franz Vohwinkel, it's a wonder this did not gain more popularity over the years. It has a cult following among Knizia fans and the OG gaming crowd, but it's wildly out of print and hard to find because it never got a reprint. While it's highly group-dependent because of the negotiations and the extreme simplicity, I find the game to be fascinating for what it is. I particularly love how quick it plays and how much variety you get from game to game. I could teach this game to a 6-year-old or my grandmother, but I would never get tired of playing this because each game develops organically from just 12 random tiles and the players' reactions to those tiles. It's incredibly tricky to win this, which makes it a highly addictive filler game. Oh, and the icing on the cake? It's the only board game I know of that uses a Vickrey auction system!
