With Rook posing as Ryker’s prisoner, the pair enter the city — but someone has been waiting for them. As they pass The Weeping Saint, Rook notices a raven perched upon the tavern sign. In a narrow alley, a masked assassin emerges from the shadows wearing a protection amulet meant to ward off magic. “Your tricks won’t work on me now.” Ryker’s expression never changes. “You prepared for hocus-pocus. You should have prepared for me.” Guards close in behind them, sealing the alley shut. Then the assassin strikes. A knife hurtles toward Ryker’s throat— —then stops midair and falls to the ground. From the darkness, Lord Mészáros steps forward applauding. “Bravo. You are indeed fascinating.” Before another word can be spoken, the raven swoops into the alley between Ryker and Rook. Black smoke spirals around them. Then they vanish without a trace.
