Scientists Found Something Beneath a California Highway That Doesn’t Match History

Under a San Diego freeway lay a broken mastodon — maybe the oldest trace of a human in the Americas, at 130,000 years. Or just an accident. In November 1992, a crew widening California State Route 54 outside San Diego dug up the bones of a mastodon — broken in ways that shouldn't happen by accident, lying next to stones that looked like they'd been used to break them. Twenty-two years later, uranium-thorium dating put the bones at about 130,700 years old. If the breaks were made by something swinging a stone, that's more than a hundred thousand years before the oldest widely accepted evidence of people anywhere in the Americas. This is the story of the Cerutti Mastodon site, and of a single question the bones can't answer: who — if anyone — broke them? Field paleontologist Richard Cerutti spotted the first bone. Steve and Kathleen Holen showed the limbs shattered in fresh spiral fractures, the way a bone full of moisture breaks under hard blows — matched by striking elephant bones with stones. USGS geologist James Paces ran the dating. In April 2017 the claim went out in Nature, eleven authors deep. But a broken bone can't name its breaker. A spiral fracture looks the same whether the force came from a hand, a collapsing streambank, a trampling hoof — or a backhoe in 1992. There's no stone tool at the site, no cut marks, no toolmaking debris, and no fossil of whoever might have done it. At 130,000 years ago the Bering land bridge was underwater, so any toolmaker would have had to cross open water — something no hominin here has ever been shown able to do. We walk through the accepted timeline of the peopling of the Americas — Clovis (~12,000 years), Monte Verde (~14,500), White Sands (~21,000–23,000) — the short list of who was even alive at 130,000 years (Neanderthals, Denisovans, Homo erectus, Homo sapiens), the excavator counter-argument from Gary Haynes, the carbonate-crust rebuttal, and why the site is, for now, largely rejected but has never been retracted. And no — despite Graham Hancock, no one working on the site claims a lost advanced civilization. The most anyone honestly claims is a stone breaking a bone. This video is science communication for a general audience. The Cerutti claim is extraordinary and contested; dates, interpretations and the equipment-damage question remain actively debated by the researchers involved.
