The Role of Apologetics in Japan

What role does apologetics actually play in Japan? In the West, apologetics is often framed as debate, argument, and defending Christianity against other belief systems. But in Japan, the cultural context is very different. Concepts like wa — harmony — shape how people approach confrontation, disagreement, and spiritual conversations. In this video, I share why the usual “debate model” of apologetics may not connect well with many Japanese people, and why a life lived with joy, humility, and love often becomes the starting point for deeper conversations about Jesus. I also share a personal story about a conversation with my Japanese neighbor, and why helping people encounter God’s Word for themselves may be one of the most powerful forms of apologetics in Japan. This is not about abandoning apologetics. It is about understanding the culture, listening well, and learning how to share the hope of Christ with wisdom. email me if you wanna get in touch: [email protected]
