FELIX HOUPHOUET-BOIGNY was President of Cote d'Ivoire from the time of its independence from France in 1960 until his death in 1993. His leadership has been heavily criticised because of his unapologetic alliance with France and his anti-pan African activities. His renown to have built the biggest church in the world, Our Lady of Peace Basilica in Yamasukkro in a predominantly Muslim country.
