Well, believe it or not, traumatic experiences may be contributing to the problem. In this video, I explain how childhood traumas can impact your writing and what you can do about it! The first thing you should know is that there’s both a capital 'T' “Trauma” and a small 't' “trauma.” That is, there are what we would call “big” traumas and “little” traumas. The reason this is important is because a lot of people think they can’t call their painful or confusing experiences “traumas” because they don’t involve a shooting or a death, for example. But any traumatic situation can leave its mark. When your trauma revolves around writing, then a fear of writing can develop. Now, how do traumatic experiences stay with us? Well to put it simply, what your unconscious mind does is it takes memories with unresolved emotions and it puts them away somewhere so that they’re not getting in the way. When this happens, it's like a bruise that you don't know is there. If I had a bruise and I could see it, then I'd understand why it hurt when someone poked it. But if I couldn't see it, I wouldn't understand why it felt sore and I'd do whatever I could to avoid someone touching it. Your brain is preventing you from doing anything with your writing because it hurts when you “touch” that unresolved experience. To decouple your fear of writing from your traumatic experiences, the best thing to do is to go see a therapist. Fortunately, there are plenty of free resources that are available to you.
