1992: 🏈 Refugio vs Bloomington

1992: 🏈 Refugio vs Bloomington September 25, 1992: Refugio 50, Bloomington 14 TD Drive Before Half Sparks Refugio, 50-14 By Mike Forman, Victoria Advocate September 26, 1992 Refugio coach George Harris felt his team was in for a good second half after driving 86 yards to take the lead just 39 seconds before the break. “I think they lost some momentum just before halftime when we scored as easy as we did,” Harris said. “I told the kids we had gotten a little tight and made some bad decisions in the first half. But we don’t look back and we don’t worry.” Harris had no reason to be concerned after the Bobcats erupted for 22 third-quarter points and cruised to a 50-14 victory over the Bloomington Bobcats in the District 30-2A opener Friday night at Bobcat Stadium. Refugio rolled up 399 yards of total offense and took advantage of five interceptions, three by Cornell Tilley and two by Roy Herron, as it moved to 4-0 on the season. Bloomington dropped to 3-1. “I’m very pleased,” Harris said. “I think we kind of had a little letdown there in the first half but things turned out pretty well.” Herron started Refugio’s third-quarter fireworks when he intercepted a Raymond Martinez pass for returned it 73 yards for a touchdown. Ragan Dunham kicked one of his six extra points to give Refugio a 28-14 lead. Refugio made it 30-14 when DeWayne LaFond blocked Martinez’s attempted kick quick out of the end zone for a safety. It took Refugio only two plays after Dana Robinson’s 24-yard return of Bloomington’s free kick to extend their advantage to 36-14. Quarterback Brent Thomas ran 21 yards for the score. Refugio completed the third-quarter blitz on a 59-yard run by Robinson, who had 147 yards on 11 carries. “We played a half,” said Bloomington coach Mark McCarthy. “In the second half, we got in some situations we didn’t want to be in.” Bloomington appeared to be in a precarious position when Refugio jumped out to a 14-0 lead. Kevin Marchak scored on a 1-yard run and Thomas, who was 5-of-7 for 97 yards, and Robinson hooked up a 50-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter. But Bloomington came back to tie the score in the second quarter on a pair of touchdown passes. Arnold Canales connected with Torrie Edwards, who out-jumped Tilley and Toya Jones, for a 38-yard scoring pass. Martinez then threw a 28-yard strike to Fernando Casares, who broke a Tilley tackle attempt and scored. “I went for the ball instead of the receiver,” admitted Jones, who had left his goggle glasses at home. “But in the second half we changed to a split defense and that turned out to be our strong point,” Jones also redeemed himself on offense when he capped Refugio’s eight-play march just before halftime and scored on a 15-yard reverse. The drive was set up by Herron’s interception. “We were driving and threw that pass a little long and they drove back and scored,” McCarthy said. “But that reflects their team. They can do it from anywhere and anytime.” Refugio also did it on defense in the second half behind LaFond, Bryan Jones and Bobby Wills. Bloomington had only 64 yards total offense and negative 20 rushing. “Their schedule had to have hurt them,” Harris said. “We had played three pretty good 3A teams. I would have been very surprised if they could have stayed with us for a full ballgame.”
